Will Smith is returning to the big screen with Brilliance, and here are the first details of his next film.
It hasn’t been a great year for Will Smith, since the furore over his assault of Chris Rock at this year’s Oscars ceremony on national television. It saw him banned by the Academy for the decade, though not before he won the Best Actor Oscar. Still, he has kept a low profile since then.
That is set to change, as the film Brilliance is about to go into production. The official synopsis reads as follows:
If 1% of the world’s children were born with powerful gifts, how would society adapt to them? The Brilliance novel trilogy is set in a future where non-neurotypical people — demonized by society as “twists” or “abnorms” — are threatening the status quo of the “normal” population with their unique gifts. They are officially labeled as “Brilliants” and are carefully tracked by the government. Federal Agent Nick Cooper, himself an abnorm, must use his own gift to infiltrate a radical group of Brilliants who plan to incite a civil war.
Smtih is set to star as Nick, with other casting yet to be announced.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the recipient of two Academy Awards for Best Short Subject for her documentaries, will make her narrative feature debut, working from a script by prolific screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.
Brilliance is set to begin production soon, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
