The World Cup is in danger and only Gerard Butler and a sniper rifle can save it: more on The Butler’s latest project here.

Here in the UK, Gerard Butler’s latest film – Greenland 2: Migration – just suddenly seemed to appear on Prime Video a few weeks ago with no fanfare at all. The sequel, and it’s a decent one, had got a cinematic release in the UK at the start of the year, but no such luxury over here.

Still, the man himself has other projects incoming that should trouble the local multiplex. Work is ongoing on How To Train Your Dragon 2, for instance, which is out next year. He’s already shot the thriller Empire City as well, which is heading to post-production.

Now, via the production company behind John Wick, he’s set to save the World Cup, just not in time for this year’s World Cup.

The Butler will be a sniper in this one, hopefully one with a gruff and angry voice. Said sniper, who by rights should have a typical action movie name like Rusty Trickle or something, gets an anonymous threat and has to act on it. If he doesn’t, over 70,000 people who have presumably paid FIFA a four-figure sum for the privilege of being at the World Cup, will be under threat.

This is a film that’s being set up to take to the Cannes Film Market this very month, with a few of getting it into production at the start of next year. Aaron Benjamin has written the script, but there’s no actual title for the movie that I know of as of yet. Furthermore, a director hasn’t thus far been attached either.

Apart from this mild inconveniences, the production will be ready to go in around six months, and should everything slot into place, a 2028 release date seems likely.

Whether the film will actually mention the World Cup (given FIFA’s love of using lawyers) or dance around it like the worst film in years, Balls Up, managed to do remains to be seen. More as we hear it.
