William Friedkin is returning to direct a feature for the first time in over a decade, and here are the first details.

Aside from a documentary he made with Mark Kermode in 2016, The Devil And Father Amorth, William Friedkin hasn’t directed a feature film since Killer Joe in 2011.

Now, it seems he has finally found a script to tempt him back to the director’s chair.

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is a play that was previously filmed with Humphrey Bogart in 1954, while Robert Altman directed it for television in 1988, starring Midnight Express’ Brad Davis. It tells the story of Queeg, a naval officer during World War Two who stands trial for mutiny for taking command from a ship captain he feels is acting in unstable fashion, endangering both the ship and its crew.

Kiefer Sutherland will star as Queeg.

Friedkin will direct from a fifty year old script by original playwright Herman Wouk.

Friedkin said of the piece that “I’ve looked at a lot of scripts in the last 10 years, and I haven’t seen anything I really wanted to do, but I think about it a lot, and it occurred to me that could be a very timely and important piece, as well as being great drama. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is one of the best court-martial dramas ever written”.

It is set to begin production in January. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
