A crew member fell and died while working on the set of Marvel’s Wonder Man. More on that story below.

Deadline reports that a crew member has died on set of Marvel’s Wonder Man in Studio City.

The rigger, named Juan Carlos Osorio, died after falling from a catwalk. Osorio was 41. The new Marvel series wasn’t in production at the time of the fall, but is due to resume filming next month.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident,” a Marvel spokesperson said in a statement.

“Everyone in the IA family is shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We are working to support our member’s family, and his fellow members and colleagues,” added IATSE President Matthew D. Loeb. “Safety on set is our highest priority and we will assist Cal/OSHA in their investigation in any way that we can. If you feel unsafe on set for any reason, members can call the IATSE Safety Hotline at 844-422-9273 or use our safety info app.”

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams. In the comics, Williams is the son of a rich industrialist and Williams inherits a munitions factory after his father dies, but competition with Stark Industries causes the factory’s profits to fall.

Williams then goes to work for Baron Zemo who gives him superhuman abilities. Williams is initially a villain for the Avengers but ends up joining them.

In the upcoming TV adaptation though, Williams is described as a stuntperson and an actor. The Hollywood Reporter described the series as “a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood and a character study”.

Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery is set to return in the series as well, no doubt as a fellow struggling actor or perhaps a mentor to Williams. Ed Harris, Josh Gad and Demetrius Grosse are also starring.

Before the fatal accident, the majority of Wonder Man was in the can, having begun production in April 2023. The cast and crew are set to return for more pick-up shots next month, after the WGA and SAG strikes halted the entire Hollywood machinery.

This isn’t the first fatal accident on the set of a Marvel-adjacent superhero film. A stuntwoman died in 2017 on the set of Deadpool 2 after a motorcycle stunt went wrong.
