Director Zack Snyder is going from Rebel Moon to rescue thriller for his next film, with The Last Photograph set to begin production in September. From his 2004 feature debut, a remake of Dawn Of The Dead, Snyder has been perhaps best known for his hyper-stylised action and use of special effects; 300, Watchmen and Man Of Steel being among his most successful movies.
The Last Photograph sounds like a step back from the slow-motion set-pieces of those earlier movies, however – not to mention his Warhammer 40,000-esque pair of Rebel Moon space fantasies. Written by Kurt Johnstad, it’s a tense-sounding action thriller about a former government agent looking for his kidnapped nephews in South America. He’s assisted by a former war photojournalist – hence the film’s title.
Filming will take place in Colombia and Los Angeles according to Deadline, with Stuart Martin and Fra Free – both actors Snyder worked with on Rebel Moon – set to star.

“The idea of taking camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me,” Snyder said in a statement. “The Last Photograph is a meditation of life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making.”
As well as being a somewhat smaller scale project for Snyder, The Last Photograph is also independently produced – unlike the filmmaker’s previous three movies, it isn’t being bankrolled by Netflix. Snyder has expressed enthusiasm about making a third Rebel Moon movie for the streaming giant, and as recently as this July, mentioned that he was also “working on an LAPD SWAT” thriller. The Last Photograph is very obviously not that film, but it appears to be a passion project for Snyder, with Deadline reporting that he found a window in which to finance and make the film before “focusing on another large production.”
Perhaps the large production is the LAPD thriller he previously mentioned – or (and this is far more of an outside bet) a third Rebel Moon. More on this as we get it.
