Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Klara And The Sun edges closer to release, with the news that the movie has been completed and rated.
It was back in May of 2023 that we first reported that Taika Waititi was circling his next film as director. The plan was for it to be an adaption of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel Klara And The Sun, the story of a robot girl created to prevent teenagers from becoming lonely. But also, the same robot girl – the Klara of the title – has to deal with anti-android sentiment.
Sony Pictures moved in to make the film, and it was first talked about around the time that Taika Waititi was potentially circling directing a Star Wars film. By October of 2023, he’d committed to Klara And The Sun though, and a cast including Jenny Ortega, Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Natasha Lyonne and Steve Buscemi came together.
Filming finished back in April 2024 in the end, and things have been quiet on the Klara And The Sun front since then. Understandably so, given the amount of post production work that must have been involved in the movie.
But we’ve now got the first confirmation that the film is pretty much finished, courtesy of it being rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. The guidance, which you can read here, notes ‘Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some violence and strong language.’
What I’ve not found any evidence of yet is Klara And The Sun appearing in the cinema release schedules, so it’s a fair bet we’ve got a while to wait yet. Sony, I’d imagine, is going to give this a sizeable outing, and so towards the back end of 2026 might just be on the cards. Will keep you posted on that as we hear it though, and obvious, when a trailer lands, will update as well.
