Online retailer Zavvi has gone under, and customers are being urged to contact their payment providers to try and get their money back.
After weeks of speculation over its future, the UK online retailer Zavvi has confirmed that it’s now in a formal insolvency process. In a post on the front page of its website, a statement confirms that administrators have been appointed.
Bottom line: the business has ceased trading, and I’d suggest that the chances of it coming back this time are on the very slim side.
The firm was still taking orders for products as recently as the weekend, but those ordered will now not be honoured. As the statement specifically remarks, “As a result of the Company’s financial position, the Company has ceased trading with immediate effect.
The Company is unable to fulfil any outstanding orders or pre-orders. Customers should not place any new orders through the Company’s website.”
Furthermore, “we are unable to accept any returns for items of any kind.”
Customers are being advised to contact their credit card company or payment provider to “establish whether they may be entitled to recover their payment.” We heartily endorse this advice, and it’s the best path available to Zavvi customers to get their funds returned to them. By the time the administrators have taken their slice out of any remaining assets, there’s unlikely to be money for the actual human beings who actually shopped with Zavvi.
There is an outside possibility that a buyer could be found for the business, but it seems a forlorn hope really. On the one hand, one fewer online physical media store is a real blow. On the other, the way customers have been left exposed is even worse. It feels like one of those cases where, administrators aside, nobody wins.
We’ll keep you posted as and when we hear more, but if you do have any outstanding Zavvi orders, we do recommend that you get onto your payment provider quickly.
