Ryan Coogler’s long-gestating X-Files reboot is moving forward and even found one of its stars. More on the project below.
Ryan Coogler truly is the man of the moment. The director’s fantastic vampire film Sinners is doing rather well for itself at the various awards ceremonies – Coogler just won the Original Screenplay award at the 2026 BAFTAs – and Deadline is now reporting that Coogler’s reboot of classic 90s sci-fi show The X-Files is moving forward, too.
Coogler confirmed last year that he was planning an The X-Files reboot, but it’s been rather quiet on that front since. Hulu has now ordered a pilot of the series, which Coogler will write and direct while Jennifer Yale has boarded the series as a showrunner.
Here’s the official logline: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
Danielle Deadwyler, seen in films like Till and The Harder They Fall, has also joined the project and will play one of the agents. No word on who might co-star with her, but news of that will surely land sooner rather than later.
In April 2025, Coogler spoke about the project on The Last Podcast on the Left.
“If we get it right, it will be really f*king scary,” the director promised.
Back then, Coogler also confirmed he had spoken to Gillian Anderson about his take on the new series. It seems that Coogler’s The X-Files will be completely separate from the original serial, but perhaps there will be a connection between the two series after all. Or, at the very least, fans will get a very satisfying cameo.
