A change of scenery is in order this week for Charles, Mabel and Oliver. Here’s our review of Only Murders In The Building episode 7.
The end is ever so nigh for our heroic trio Charles, Mabel and Oliver as well as Only Murders In The Building season 4. With only three episodes remaining, we’re edging closer to finding out who killed Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).
However, as we learned last week, it wasn’t just Sazz whose remains were found in the building’s incinerator. Gasp! That’s right, another fake shoulder was found within the remains and it belongs to the mysterious Mr. Dudenoff himself.
It’s starting to seem unlikely that the Only Murders In The Building film’s directors, the Brothers Sisters, could be the murderers. Last week’s thrillingly different episode was all about the sisters, but they claim they didn’t kill anyone. Dudenoff was their former film professor and the sisters were simply looking for him. It’s not exactly an alibi, but I’ll take it.
This week’s episode doesn’t exactly give us any more clues about who the murderer could be, but it does feature a neat change of scenery. Now that our podcasting trio is pretty certain they’re in grave danger, considering someone has been watching them via a secret camera and also texts all of them from Sazz’s number to clarify he, she or they are indeed watching them, Charles, Mabel and Oliver skip town in a hurry.
They end up at Charles’ sister’s house. The sister, Doreen, is played by none other than Melissa McCarthy, which makes perfect sense after the season was advertised as the starriest season yet. Speaking of stars, Meryl Streep also makes a very welcome return as Loretta, which gives her and Oliver a chance to sort out their will-they-won’t-they relationship.
Naturally, more chaos ensues at Doreen’s house. Not only is she a collector of deeply disturbing dolls, she’s also very keen on Oliver, much to Loretta’s annoyance. What’s more, Eva, Zach and Eugene show up as does Bev; the studio is threatening to kill the movie. There’s a lot going on in episode 7 but it is an absolutely hilarious episode with plenty of laugh out loud moments.
Season 4 is particularly good at putting incredibly funny people in the same room and simply watching the aforementioned chaos ensure. Selena Gomez even momentarily breaks character in a scene with Molly Shannon, further proving that this season might have the best cast of any season of Only Murders In The Building. This season has an unpredictable edge to it, which makes every episode naturally surprising; anything could ā and probably will ā happen.
The only downside of that is that Sazz’s murder seems to often take a backseat in the series. Several episodes seem to acknowledge that there has indeed been a murder, but then the action moves elsewhere and comedy replaces any hint of investigation. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I have no clue who the murderer even could be and it’s becoming clearer that it’s because the series isn’t as interested in solving the murder as it is throwing a lot of comedy legends in a room together.
Join us again next week for another deep dive into Only Murders In The Building season 4!
