Hayao Miyazakiā€™s The Boy And The Heron is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK: more here.

The work of Hayao Miyazaki, and indeed the broader Studio Ghibli, isn’t brilliantly represented on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical media in the UK. As such, happy to take good news where we can find it there, and in this case, it’s that Miyazaki’s most recent film – The Boy And The Heron – is heading to the format in September.

This, of course, was Miyazaki’s coming out of retirement movie, released last year to (expected!) great acclaim. It was distributed in the UK by Elysian, and to its credit, it’s now behind the physical media outing for the movie as well.

The Boy And The Heron will be on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray over here therefore on 23rd September. You can find more information on the release, and order yourself a copy, right here.

There is some additional feature material included as well as the film too. Supplements included feature-length storyboards, interviews with Joe Hisaishi (composer), Toshio Suzuki (producer) and Takeshi Honda (supervising animator). There’s also something called ‘drawing with Takeshi Honda’ listed as well, alongside a music video, teasers, and trailers.

The disc is available to preorder now (and there’s a Blu-ray and DVD version of it that’s gone up for order as well). For now, here’s the official synopsis for The Boy And The Heron

From legendary Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) comes a Bafta and Academy Award-winning new fantasy adventure. After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events leads him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey, Mahito must uncover the secrets of the world and the truth about himself.
