The BBC wants an animated Doctor Who show for pre-school children. Reckon you’re up for it? More details on the plans here.
In today’s entry for the Unexpected News prize, the BBC has opted to do something a little bit different with Doctor Who. As per an official announcement from the corporation, it’s on the lookout for a company to do an animated Doctor Who show, that’s going to be aimed at a pre-school audience.
This is, of course, separate to the main run of the show, but also, a continued sign that the BBC has long term plans for the Time Lord.
“The BBC is looking for a passionate production company to create and produce the series, which will run independently from the main show, that will see the Doctor travelling through time and space for the pre-school audience, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends”, goes the announcement. Wondering already if Billie Piper’s agent has been in touch.
The assumption would be that the show will be on the air no sooner than the back end of 2026, and by then, the broader future of Doctor Who should hopefully be very much secured as well.
Patricia Hidalgo, who has the posh job title of director of Children’s and Education at the BBC, offered a very happy quote to the official announcement.
“Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor! This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and the magic of the Doctor in a brand new format. This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project, as we continue our commitment and investment in the UK’s animation industry.”
While you lot carry on reading this, I’m off to buy myself a fresh packet of Crayolas, and I’ll be getting to work on my pitch. More as we hear it. I’m basically going to take the plot of Mr Benn and run it through a thesaurus. Back soon…
