Olivia Wilde will direct and Margot Robbie will star in an adaptation of comic book Avengelyne, it’s been announced.

Comic book writer Rob Liefeld’s biggest success is undoubtably Deadpool, which Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick brought to the screen to huge critical and commercial success – Deadpool And Wolverine, which sees Hugh Jackman reprise his iconic role, will be released in UK cinemas on the 26th July. You can watch the trailer here.

Warner Bros is now very close to closing a deal on another of Liefeld’s comics, Avengelyne. Furthermore, Margot Robbie – as you probably gleaned from the cunning headline to this piece – is circling the lead role.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of hell, to confront the devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle, when it is empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on Earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon

Though Robbie hasn’t signed on yet, Deadline reports that she would play the title character and also produce through her company LuckyChap.

Olivia Wilde will direct from a screenplay by The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. Simon Kinberg, who produces the Deadpool films, will also co-produce with Audrey Chon through their company Genre.

It’s the latest film to be added to what is now a very busy slate for Robbie. She is producing an adaptation of The Sims from a script by Kate Herron and Briony Redman, as well as the long mooted adaptation of Monopoly.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
