Andy Serkis’ film of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is finally arriving in the summer, with an extensive voice cast announced.

For a long time now, Andy Serkis has been working away on a movie adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. An animated film, it’s one that Andy Serkis is directing, as well as taking his place in the voice cast. Nicholas Stoller has penned the screenplay, and finally, details of the movie have been revealed.

It’s going to feature an extensive voice cast, including Seth Rogen, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Steve Buscemi, Gaten Matarazzo, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson and Iman Vellani. The animated side of things has been handled by the company Cinesite, with producer Connie Nartonis Thompson on board.

It’s been a project on Serkis’ slate for around a decade and a half, and the movie is set to get a release this summer. In the US at least, it’s been earmarked for 11th July.

The book, as ever, feels timely. Penned by Orwell as a thinly veiled tale of the Russian revolution, Animal Farm follows a collection of animals who overthrow their human owners and take over Manor Farm. The animals make a whole bunch of changes, before over time, those in positions of powers begin to resemble the humans they overthrew. It’s a fairy story at heart, but one made of steel.

Given that Serkis was working on this in the early 2010s, it’s been quite the period of turmoil going on in the background while he puts his Animal Farm together. Is there still relevance for a story about the corruption of government and the… it’s okay, I’ll stop. This stuff writers itself after a while.

Hopefully, Animal Farm will pop up on the UK release schedule around the same time as the US date. It’s not on there yet, and couldn’t tell you who’s distributing. Very much looking forward to seeing the film, though. More, as ever, as we hear it.
