Nearly 40 years on from the release of Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, a TV remake is on the way from A24.

While it’s well known that vampires never age, the same is true to some extent for vampire films – the really good ones anyway. Surely belonging to that coterie is Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, the 1987 neo-western horror that marked Bigelow as a huge future talent. A promise she’s been making good on over since, with the likes of Blue Steel, Point Break, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker.

It’s also well known that boutique indie studio A24 has been on the hunt for material to develop its growing television division. A Friday The 13th prequel series titled Crystal Lake is already on the way, and according to The InSneider, a TV version of Near Dark is set to follow. If that wasn’t promising enough, the outlet also suggests that Bigelow is involved in some way, too.

We haven’t seen too much of Bigelow over the last few years – she was working on Aurora, a project for Netflix which was said to be scrapped around the time that Scott Stuber vacated his position as the company’s head of film. Happily, she’s now working on a different project for the streaming platform: some kind of White House thriller starring Rebecca Ferguson and Idris Elba. When the film ultimately releases, it will mark her first project to see the light of day since 2017’s brilliant Detroit.

As for a TV remake of Near Dark, we’ll gleefully add it to the list of upcoming artsy vampire projects we’re excited about. We’ve already had the wonderful Nosferatu from Robert Eggers which kickstarted 2025 in style, before Ryan Coogler wowed us with Sinners. But there’s also Panos Cosmatos’ upcoming The Flesh Of The Gods and we’re still hoping that Chloe Zhao gets around to her own vampire western project once her next film Hamnet releases this year.

With all these possible bloodsucker projects to come, why not read something about the cinematic evolution of space vampires? We’ll bring you more on this rather exciting project as we hear it.
