The latest Stephen King adaptation is picking up a strong buzz and may even be heading to cinemas after all: it’s The Boogeyman.
We’ve known for around a year that the Stephen King-penned short story The Boogeyman is coming to the screen, with the news that 20th Century Studios backed an adaptation of it for the Hulu streaming service. Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage was announced as the helmer of the film.
Yellowjackets’ Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina are the lead roles in the production. David Dastmalchian also features too. Filming on The Boogeyman began in March 2022 with the film set for a release this coming June.
The film’s plot is said to be different to the King story, following ‘a sixteen-year-old (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister, still reeling from the death of their mother, as they are targeted by a supernatural boogeyman after their psychologist father (Chris Messina) has an encounter with a desperate patient in their house.’
Whilst the film was originally expected to head to Disney+ in the UK, rapturous test screenings have reportedly influenced executives to look at giving the film a theatrical release instead, as Paramount did with Smile last year to the benefit of audiences, cinemas and the studio’s coffers. We’ll bring you more on The Boogeyman as we hear it but in the meantime, you can catch that trailer below.
