Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be his first R-rated film in two decades

Gird yourself for the Christopher Nolan’s first return to swearing, sexuality and nudity for a long, long time.  A new TV spot for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Oppenheimer has revealed that the film will be rated R for ‘swearing, sexuality and nudity’, the kind of grown-up behaviour that we haven’t really seen Christopher Nolan’s characters indulge in for a couple of decades now. Nolan certainly seems to be making the most of the freedoms afforded to him with this new deal with Universal Pictures, and we’re looking forward to a tale shaped towards adults, especially given the complex and sensitive subject matter that he is dealing with. That subject matter is of course, the Manhattan Project and the creation of the world’s first atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy stars as American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, ‘long considered the father of the atomic bomb’. The film also features Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Peck, and David Dastmalchian. The film, which will hit cinemas on the 21st of July, will mark Nolan’s first R-rated film since 2002’s Insomnia, a crime drama studio picture he made for Warner Bros. Insomnia marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the studio that would span almost two decades and produce some of the most well-known films of the 21st century. When that partnership finally disintegrated in 2021, Nolan instead teamed with Universal and seems to be creatively renewed as a result, although the true test of that will come when Oppenheimer releases on July 21st.
