Taika Waititi’s packed schedule begins to take shape, although the ongoing actors’ strike may yet have a say in things.
We know Taika Waititi is a busy man who juggles many projects at a time. Back in May we learned that he was looking to direct an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel about ‘Klara, a robot girl created to prevent teenagers from becoming lonely.’ This was on top of a planned Star Wars movie and overseeing the release of the already-shot Next Goal Wins, the filmmaker’s upcoming comedy which has been delayed several times (but is now releasing in the UK on Boxing Day). Waititi also has many other rumoured projects brewing too, such as remakes of Flash Gordon and Akira. We’ve not had any news on either of those for a while, but we’ll keep digging. Anyway: according to The Cinemaholic, Waititi’s next project to shoot will be Klara And The Sun, with production set to take place in Australia in January. If you ask us, that might be a bit of a stretch given that the ongoing actors’ strike is causing so much uncertainty at the moment. Still, with tools having been downed in Hollywood for some time now, perhaps Waititi has finally gotten around to writing his long-mooted Star Wars project? Time will tell, we suppose. As we said when the project was first announced, Klara And The Sun is said to be a sweet and sad novel. Experiencing events through Klara’s eyes, we often see how she doesn’t fully comprehend what’s happening around her – an idea that we imagine might have interested Waititi who tends to like stories where one character is out of step with much of the world. That said, the tone of the book is markedly different from much of Waititi’s prior filmography, so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s planning to alter it significantly or is aiming to stretch himself with a project of a different tone.
