Russell Crowe has been chatting about Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, and has admitted he has a concern or two about the film.

Spoilers for Gladiator lie ahead.

Currently undergoing additional photography work in the UK is this winter’s belated sequel to Gladiator, which we’re cunning calling Gladiator 2. Whether it’ll end up being called Gladiator 2 is still unclear, but let’s go with it.

It’s 24 years since the original film, which won Russell Crowe an Academy Award for Best Actor, and there’s been no shortage of talk since of a possible follow-up. Yet for, well, reasons, the follow-up hasn’t happened. It’s only now that Ridley Scott is back on set, shooting a new movie, this time with with Paul Mescal donning the armour instead of Russell Crowe.

We’re going into spoiler territory for the original film now, so we’ll insert a picture of a spoiler squirrel before getting down to business.

This little chap is called Basil.

Still here? Okay. Russell Crowe’s character perishes at the end of the first film, and in an interview with the Kyle Meredith With podcast, he’s admitted to one or two concerns over the new Gladiator.

“I’m slightly uncomfortable with the fact they’re making another one”, he admitted. Not in a throwing mud at Gladiator 2 sense, but just in general by the sounds of it. Why the discomfort? “Because, of course, I’m dead and I have no say in what gets done.”

He’s not actively involved in the new film, but does appear to have got some intel on it. “A couple of the things I’ve heard I’m like — no, no, no, that’s not in the moral journey of that particular character. But I can’t say anything, it’s not my place, I’m six foot under. So we’ll see what that is like.”

The film is out at the end of the year, and is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the season. You can read more on Crowe’s comments here.
