The decline of the comic shop is charted in Shopping For Superman, a new indie documentary. Hereās the trailer and more details.
Shops and physical things are something that have, as you well know, become quite an endangered species in the modern era. Internet giants such as Amazon have gobbled up market share of pretty much everything, and things like DVDs, physical comic books and such like are in decline.
But they’re not dead, and plenty are fighting for the cause, and telling the stories. Case in point, this really interesting looking independent documentary, Shopping For Superman. Directed by Wes Eastin, it’s a film I’ve just stumbled across, and look forward to finding out more about. It’s telling the story of the comic book store, and while an American documentary and American focused, there’s something quite universal about all of this.
Itās an independent feature, and a trailer for it has just been released. The trailer looks like this…
The synopsis, meanwhile, reads as follows…
The origin story of your friendly neighborhood comic shop. Tracing the 50-year history of the local comic book storeās far-reaching impact, we examine their cultural significance and the numerous threats they face today. After a 75% industry contraction, floundering sales, superhero fatigue, and online retail competition, can our heroes survive?
As it’s an independent, I’ve got no idea of a release date or anything at the moment, just the fact that it exists. A Kickstarter campaign in 2024 earned the film its completion funds, and hopefully we’ll have news on how we can get to see it soon.
In the meantime, you can find more on the website, and contribute if you want to (should you have missed the crowdfunding campaign), right here.
We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about this, and all power to independent filmmakers, fighting the fight.
