The shortlisted nominees for this year’s BAFTA awards have been announced – and All Quiet On The Western Front is leading the way.

In one month’s time, on 19th February, the 2023 BAFTA awards show will take place. After announcing the longlisted nominees on 6th January, those lists have now been whittled down to the final contenders.

It’s looking like it may be a big night for All Quiet On The Western Front, which has gathered a total of 14 nominations. This means it ties with 2001’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the most BAFTA nominations for a foreign language film.

Just behind it are The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, with ten nominations each. For Banshees, Colin Farrell is nominated in the leading actor category, while Brendan Gleeson has sneakily been categorised as a supporting actor. Given that they’re really joint leads, perhaps this gives Gleeson a head start over the other supporting actor nominees?

Other films with multiple nominations include Elvis, Aftersun, The Batman, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Top Gun: Maverick and The Whale. Meanwhile Spielberg’s The Fabelmans has been nominated in just one category.

Despite BAFTA’s attempts at making the Best Director longlist inclusive (it’s a 50/50 split between male and female nominees) only one woman has made it through to the shortlist – Gina Prince-Bythewood for the fantastic The Woman King.

Take a look at the full list of nominees below. It’s a real reminder that the last year has been one full of brilliant films.
