Legendary effects makeup artist Tom Savini’s house was recently damaged in a housefire. Now a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help support him.
Tragically, a fire severely damaged special makeup effects artist Tom Savini’s Pittsburgh home over the weekend (15th August). For the 79 year-old filmmaking legend, it was a particularly terrible personal and artistic loss: Savini had lived in the same house his entire life, with its rooms filled with his sculptures and props from a lifetime of work.
Savini and his wife Jodii were thankfully unharmed, but the fire sadly claimed the lives of the couple’s two cats, and devastated a home that had belonged to Savini’s family for several generations.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to provide support for the artist, actor and filmmaker.
For Tom, this loss is deeply personal and far beyond the damage to the building itself,” writes organiser Jason Baker on the campaign’s webpage. “This is a traumatic situation for anyone to endure at any age. It has been especially difficult for Tom being a senior citizen 80 years old. The fire also destroyed many priceless pieces of Tom’s life and history, including family heirlooms brought over from Italy and iconic props from Tom’s illustrious career.”
Savini’s early career featured several collaborations with George A Romero, including the boundary-pushing gore effects in 1978’s Dawn Of The Dead. He subsequently worked on the lies of Maniac (1980) and Creepshow (1982), acted in several movies, including From Dusk Till Dawn and Machete, and turned to directing with the 1990 remake of Night Of The Living Dead.
The campaign has reached $43,178 at the time of writing. Here’s hoping that financial support provides some comfort after such an awful event.
