Update: Almost 30 years later, Mel Brooks is making a sequel to his Star Wars-parodying 1987 comedy, Spaceballs. For a while, we made do with calling it Spaceballs 2. But straight from Cinemacon in Las Vegas comes the official title: Spaceballs: The New One.
As Brooks points out in the video below , he hasn’t referenced back to the first film and called it Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money. Here’s the man himself to explain why…
Our original story follows…
26th September 2025: Almost 40 years after the 1987 original, comedy sequel Spaceballs 2 has formally begun production at Amazon MGM Studios. Confirming earlier reports, the space fantasy parody will reunite several major members of the original cast; Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and Rick Moranis are all to return – the latter being particularly significant, since he’s essentially been retired since the 1990s.
Pullman and Zuniga will again play the leading couple, Lone Star and Princess Vespa – the original’s Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa analogues in what was a belated skewering of the Star Wars franchise. Moranis will return as the diminutive Dark Helmet, while new additions, per Deadline, include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, son of Bill.
Continuing Spaceballs' affectionate send-up of Star Wars, an official image of the sequel’s cast is a clear nod to The Force Awakens’ publicity photo from a decade ago – the composition and use of monochrome being one of the giveaways. The pic’s also filled with little nods and hints at what we might expect from the sequel, too.

We can see producer Mel Brooks on the screen in the middle, there, next to a distinctive Spaceballs helmet. As well as co-writing and directing the first film, he also had two supporting roles as the villainous President Skroob and the Yoda-esque sage, Yogurt. We can see Yogurt’s robes hanging up on the top left, indicating that Brooks – now aged 99 – could be making a return visit as the latter character.
A large pizza sat on a chair on the right is a clear reference to Pizza the Hutt. The word is that Spaceballs 2 will poke fun at The Force Awakens’ generational cross-over, with Josh Pullman playing the equivalent of Kylo Ren.
ScreenRant, which has a detailed breakdown of the image’s references, also reckons that the fire hydrant behind Josh Gad (who co-wrote the sequel’s script) could indicate that he’s playing Barf, or at any rate a descendant of Barf, originally played by the late John Candy.
There are other elements in the image that leave us stumped. What’s with the fly swatter on the left? Is that a bear trap behind the laptop in the middle there? Let us know if you have answers, readers.
Stray filmmaker Josh Greenbaum is taking over as director, while the script is by Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. A title and plot details are shrouded at present, though more will likely emerge in due course. It’s thought that Spaceballs 2 will be in cinemas in 2027.
