Writer Diablo Cody has been chatting about the upcoming 9 to 5 remake and it’ll focus on a generational divide. More on it below.
In April, we learned that Diablo Cody was writing and Jennifer Aniston was producing a new remake of the 1980s classic film 9 To 5 for 20th Century Studios.
Cody visited the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend and told Entertainment Weekly (via Deadline here) that the script for the remake has been finished and it’ll be a little different from the original.
“One thing that was really fun about it for me is that the original movie focused on the battle of the sexes and the corporate world,” Cody said. “And to me, I see most of the conflict taking place generationally, like Gen Z versus boomers in the workplace, and how now we have this whole generation of people coming up who’ve learned to set boundaries, and that is actually, shockingly enough, a new development.”
It’s hard to disagree with Cody’s observations. The writer went on to add: “You have other generations out there in the corporate world who we’re told just to kind of suck it up. So there’s definitely a cultural clash there, and I thought, ‘Oh, this seems like it’s so ripe for comedic treatment.ā”
A remake of Colin Higgins’ film has been talked about for years and in 2019, it seemed that all hope was lost as original star Dolly Parton announced that the remake was not happening. It was only in April of this year that we got confirmation that the 9 To 5 remake was back on the table and officially in development.
No news on who might star in the film yet. Aniston is only confirmed to be producing but she often stars in the projects she produces, so we wouldn’t count her out quite just yet.
More on 9 To 5 as we hear it.
