A little bit more on the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie

Plans are afoot for a new Dungeons & Dragons film from the directors of Game Night – and they’ve been discussing the project.

The first time a Dungeons & Dragons movie came to the screen, back at the turn of the century, it didn’t quite go to plan. The movie was poorly received, didn’t do the intended business, and in spite of having Jeremy Irons in the cast, it didn’t really work. Plans for further movies were put on the back burner.

More recently, though, a fresh Dungeons & Dragons project is pressing ahead, with the Game Night team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M Goldstein attached to the project. They’re writing and directing a new movie, that’s currently scheduled for release in 2022. And in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they’ve been chatting about the project.

Fans of the game both, Daley said that “D&D is such a unique look at the fantasy genre where it is contemporary in terms of the people playing it and the way they speak to each other. So we never wanted to spoof the genre of fantasy or take the piss out of it. But we did want to find another way into it that we hadn’t necessarily seen before”.

Goldstein added that they’re working with the company behind Dungeons & Dragons – Wizards Of the Coast – and added “because as much as we know about D&D, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the 45 years of lore that’s out there, so these guys are such a resource”.

Development continues whilst the pair are in lockdown, with casting set to take place over Zoom for the time being. More news on the project as we get it. The full interview can be found here.
