Sonic 2’s day is coming back it seems, as a second Sonic The Hedgehog movie goes into early development – with the original’s director and writers on board.

Pretty much an expected piece of news this, but a piece of news nonetheless. The Sonic The Hedgehog film is getting a follow-up.

The first film arrived earlier this year, delayed after some high profile work to retool the look of the title character. Yet it came the other side of that process to emerge a hit movie. It grossed over $300m at cinemas worldwide, with its release slightly curtailed as a consequence of the Coronavirus-induced shutdown of cinemas around the world.

That’s proven to be enough to trigger the sequel, which is now in early development. Which direction it goes remains to be seen. For the old videogame nerds out there, it’d be fun if they released it on a Tuesday. They could recycle the old ‘Sonic 2’s day’ marketing campaign from the 1990s.

Pat Casey and Josh Miller are returning to pen the screenplay for the new movie anyway, with Jeff Fowler set to direct. That’s the creative team that brought the first film to the screen.

No word yet on when to expect it, or whether Jim Carrey and James Marsden are set to return. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes in.
