Donald Trump is getting the biopic treatment again as Italian producer Andrea Iervolino looks to get the project off the ground.
Last year’s The Apprentice – a great film, if you ask me – was surrounded by controversy. Director Ali Abbasi, armed with the acting abilities of Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan, brought the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, to the big screen in a biopic that didn’t exactly flatter the businessman-turned-politician. In our review, we called it “an engrossing character study of a man who took the opportunity to become the worst possible version of himself.”
Trump was notoriously against the film and even tried to stop it from being released, eventually losing that fight. Deadline now reports that a new biopic of Trump is in the works, with Ferrari producer Andrea Iervolino attached to it. The new movie reportedly has a pretty high price tag attached to it; the film’s budget could be as high as $100m.
Iervolino’s company describes the project as “a major new biographical film centered on the life and legacy of Donald J Trump – real estate mogul, television icon, and 45th and 47th President of the United States.”
It’s said that the biopic also aims to be a lot “kinder” towards the President than The Apprentice was.
“Whether one agrees or disagrees with his politics, there’s no denying Donald Trump’s impact on the modern era,” Iervolino said. “As a producer, I’m interested in exploring the deeper story of the man – the rise, the challenges, the resilience. Our goal is to deliver a film that is bold, balanced, and artistically ambitious.”
Trump has been in the headlines in the past few days after he suggested he was going to impose “100%” tariffs on films coming to America from overseas. We’re still not entirely sure what he meant by this, but we do know the details of a separate proposition from actor Jon Voight, who was appointed by Trump as one of three ambassadors for Hollywood.
No cast has been attached to the new film, nor is there a director or a writer on board yet, it seems. Iervolino is aiming to get it all together rather quickly and the producer hopes to begin filming the biopic later this year.
We’ll have to see if the project moves forward and what the President thinks of it. We’ll keep you posted.
