A new Texas Chainsaw film is being discussed in Hollywood and Strange Darling director JT Mollner is one of the interested parties.

Horror is a safe bet in Hollywood these days, especially if your movie belongs to an established franchise, so it’s not exactly surprising that Deadline reports that a new Texas Chainsaw movie is now being planned behind closed doors in Hollywood. Verve, the agency that has repped the Texas Chainsaw rights since 2017, is reportedly looking to revive the franchise.

“Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise,” a spokesperson told Deadline about the plans.

“Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers or buyers,” the rep added. “Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are pre-emptively being brought to Verve.”

Deadline reports that Strange Darling director JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee are interested in taking the project on, and Glen Powell would like to read the script when there is one. Whether Mollner is just interested in providing a script or also directing is unclear at this point, but Deadline notes that A24, Neon and Lionsgate are keen to board the project with these parties involved.

It’s still early days for the new Texas Chainsaw film, and no such thing has been officially announced, so take the above with a healthy pinch of salt.

There have been a total of nine Texas Chainsaw films to date, with the latest one being released in 2022 on Netflix. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, starring Alexandra Daddario and directed by David Blue Garcia with a story from Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues, arguably doesn’t quite capture the terror of Hooper’s original, but we called it an “entertaining gore-fest” in our review

Whether the new film will be a complete reboot of the 1974 original or a sequel of sorts is unclear at this point. We’ll bring you more as we hear it.
