Freddy Krueger’s debut is coming to 4K, as A Nightmare On Elm Street celebrates its 40th birthday: more here.

Comfortably one of the most impactful horror movies of the 1980s, Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare On Elm Street not only proved to be a box office success, and not only spawned an ongoing saga, but it also introduced the character of Freddy Krueger for the first time as well. Many sequels would follow, and even though Freddy has been off screen for a while now, plans surely remain afoot for more.

Yet the film that started it all off is getting to celebrate its 40th birthday, and for the moment, the onus is on that. Warner Bros is thus bringing the movie to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time, initially in a deluxe collector’s set that’s just gone up for pre-order.

You can find more information on the release, and order yourself a copy, right here.

Billed as the 40th anniversary Ultimate Collectors Edition with Steelbook, the set includes both a 4K disc and a Blu-ray in the box. That means that previous extra features are being carried over – and there’s a lot of them – while the pack itself comes with a double sided poster, art cards, a booklet, and individual numbering.

At the heart of it all is the film itself, of course, and you can read the synopsis for the whole package right here…

Hailed as “one of the most intelligent and terrifying horror films of the 1980s” (The Movie Guide), celebrate 40 years of Wes Craven’s nightmarish masterpiece with a brand new 4K restoration and Ultimate Collector’s Edition featuring a Steelbook with new key art, theatrical poster and other premiums.

From modern horror master Wes Craven (Scream 1, 2, and 3) comes a timeless shocker that remains the standard bearer for terror.

Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) is having grisly nightmares. Meanwhile, her high-school friends, who are having the very same dreams, are being slaughtered in their sleep by the hideous fiend of their shared nightmares. When the police ignore her explanation, she herself must confront the killer in his shadowy realm.

We don’t have the exact release date yet, short of the fact we’re expecting this later in the year. We’ll keep you posted…
