David Harewood will appear as the enigmatic Mr. Door in Alan Wake 2, a trans-dimensional entity with his own chat show.

As revealed in an exclusive feature for the latest issue of Edge magazine, David Harewood will be starring as Mr. Door in the upcoming Alan Wake 2. Harewood is probably most well known for his portrayal of Martian Manhunter/J’onn J’onzz in Supergirl, as well as for playing the CIA Counterterrorism Director David Estes in Homeland.

Mr. Door, meanwhile, might be familar to players of Remedy’s Control. At one point, Dylan Faden – brother of the protagonist Jesse – says that he encountered Mr. Door in his dreams, who told him that there were many worlds existing side by side and on top of one another. Mr. Door himself exists in all of them at the same time.

In Alan Wake 2, Mr. Door hosts his own chat show, In Between With Mr. Door, which takes place inside the Dark Place. Alan has been trapped in the dream-like Dark Place since the conclusion of the first Alan Wake game.

Alan Wake 2 gives the player control over not only the titular character, but also an FBI agent called Saga Anderson, who is investigating a series of ritual murders in Bright Falls, the main location of the first game. Players can swap between Alan and Saga at any time.

The sequel also introduces a new location – Watery, the neighbouring town to Bright Falls. This fishing village will form one of three hubs for Saga, along with Bright Falls and Cauldron Lake. And speaking of Cauldron Lake, this has now been declared off-limits by the Federal Bureau of Control, which has set up a monitoring station there, as hinted at in the AWE expansion for Control.

Alan Wake has a Writers Room in the Dark Place, where he can rearrange stories to affect reality, while Saga has a Mind Place, a wood-panelled room where she can sift through clues to search for new leads.

Game director Sam Lake tells Edge that Remedy has been trying to make Alan Wake 2 for a long, long time, saying that there have been five concepts for the game down the years. Remedy pitched a sequel to Microsoft in the early 2010s, but it was turned down and the studio ended up making Quantum Break instead. After that, another Alan Wake 2 pitch was turned down, but parts of it were recycled: “A lot of the design ideas that ended up in Control were present there,” said Lake.

Alan Wake 2 is due for release on 17 October 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
