An Alita: Battle Angel sequel is still very much an option, according to producer Jon Landau.

When Alita: Battle Angel was released back in 2017, it became director Robert Rodriguez’s highest grossing film, which is no mean feat for the man responsible for the wonderful Spy Kids franchise.

The film, based on Yukito Kishiro’s anime of the same name, followed a cyborg with no memory of a previous life, and the quest to discover her destiny. It’s quite surprising, then, that we are a few years down the line and no sequel has appeared, although the box office returns weren’t quite at the level 20th Century Fox (remember that name?) was hoping for.

James Cameron, a producer on the film, along with Rodriguez have always remained positive about the idea, with the cameos of Edward Norton, Michelle Rodriguez and Jai Courtney intended to be setup for the sequel.

However, this week producer Jon Landau, chatting with Deadline, revealed that talks with Disney, who now owns Fox of course, are very much ongoing about continuing the franchise

“There’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to circle back and do a sequel to. We’re talking to Robert about that; hopefully that comes to fruition.”

That’s more news than we’ve had in quite a long time, but the ball is now very much in Disney’s court. A film we’d assumed dead might just not be…
