If you missed Argylle in cinemas, or just fancy another watch, you can buy or rent the film on digital platforms tomorrow.
Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle debuted in cinemas early February and Universal are now making the film available to watch from home.
You can buy and rent the film on digital platforms (your Prime Videos, Microsoft Stores and the lot, take your pick) from tomorrow 19th March.
The film follows Bryce Dallas Howard’s mousy spy novelist Elly Conway, who is swept up in a rather incredible adventure after her spy novels begin to resemble real life a bit too closely. Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa and Samuel L. Jackson all appear in the film alongside Howard.
You may remember that the film was produced by Apple Original Films and the film will be making its way to AppleTV+, but there’s no info on when that might be. Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon debuted in cinemas in October and was made available on the streaming platform in January, so following that logic, we can expect Argylle to arrive around May this year.
Argylle had a bit of a rough time in cinemas. Vaughn’s film had a budget of about $200 million, but only managed to $96 million. Variety once estimated that the film would have to gross at least $500 million to break even after marketing costs, so that $96 million is a pretty dreadful result for Apple and Universal, who helped distribute the film in cinemas.
Critics weren’t particularly kind to the film either. The film currently has a shocking 33% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
We said this of the film in our review: “The film, directed with maximalism by Vaughn, includes some of his worst instincts as well as his best. Argylle has a frustratingly formulaic plot and thin characters, but there’s also excellent fight choreography and a riotously fun dream ballet of violence. Argylle, clearly designed for the sanitised masses, also suffers greatly from the lack of gore; in fact, it’s a completely bloodless, and thus toothless, affair.”
