Ari Aster’s hugely anticipated next film is en route and the trailer promises an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

In a year packed with potential, the April release of Ari Aster’s next film, Beau Is Afraid, has to be right up there in a shortlist of the most anticipated films of the year. It’s been a couple of years since Aster hit us with a one-two punch of Hereditary and Midsommar, two gloriously strange horror films that released just a year apart. Aster’s next film, Beau Is Afraid (formerly titled Disappointment Boulevard) looks set to build on his offbeat horror credentials whilst presenting us with a tone and plot that is unlike anything else we’ll see this year.

The film looks set to be a project that will defy genre, so we’ll say that it looks like a mind-bending version of Misery and leave it there, although that will likely prove to be an inadequate description when Beau Is Afraid finally arrives in May.

Joaquin Phoenix leads a very promising cast including Michael Gandolfini, Parker Posey and Amy Ryan who is particularly unsettling in the trailer, which you can find below.

Like Midsommar and Hereditary before it, Beau Is Afraid has been rated as an R in the US, which is more good news as far as we’re concerned. The film comes courtesy of A24 and we’re hoping that this will be this year’s Nope, ostensibly a horror-inflected drama but one so rich with ideas that it lives long in the memory. Ahead of that May release date, you can catch the trailer below. We’ll bring you UK release details as we hear them.
