As he heads to the back end of his 70s, seemingly in a lot better shape than I am at a, cough, younger age, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still toying with a return to some of his biggest franchise. Last seen on the big screen in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, there have been assorted projects mooted for Arnie in the time since, but nothing has come to fruition as of yet.
Twins sequel Triplets is very unlikely following the passing of director Ivan Reitman, and any future Terminator outing is likely to happen without Schwarzenegger involved.
However, there are still projects. Three, in particular.
King Conan, the third in the Conan The Barbarian line of films, has been knocking around for ages now, and as part of a series of news drops from the Arnold Sports Festival in Ohio that took place over the weekend, TheArnoldFans is hinting that Christopher McQuarrie may be taking a look at the project. McQuarrie was hinted at – the guy who “did Tom Cruise’s last four movies” – but not named.
Schwarzenegger did confirm that he’d be playing an “age appropriate” role in the new film, should they get it off the ground.
Arnie also confirmed that he’d been chatting to Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the last two live action Predator movies, and there’s talk of Schwarzenegger returning in a role that’s not just his likeness. “We’ve talked about it,” he confirmed. And then threw in that Fox has “come to be me and said ‘we want you to do Predator, we just got a script for you to do Commando 2.”
No further details of that Commando 2 script were forthcoming.
The most likely of those to my eye to happen is the new Predator movie, given that it’s pretty much a certainty to happen. The franchise is active, has been attracting an audience again, and has creatives involved. It seems the next logical step there.
King Conan might well be rocket-fuelled should it genuinely now be on the docket of Christopher McQuarrie. But it’s not the only project he’s juggling too.
Personally, I’ll believe Commando 2 is happening when I see it.
