Aubrey Plaza will lead the cast of ‘Feel-Bad’ romance Liarmouth, which marks John Waters’ first directorial outing in two decades.

John Waters hasn’t made a film in 20 years, but he’s set to bring his demented brand of comedy back to the silver screen, along with a leading actor who should prove equal to his ambitions.

Waters’ last film was 2004’s A Dirty Shame which starred Tracy Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Chris Isaak. That was his comedy about sex addiction. In the 1990s alone, Waters also gave us Pecker, which featured Edward Furlong taking pictures of perverts, and Serial Mom, the 1994 black comedy featuring the mighty Kathleen Turner as a mother who doubles as a serial killer.

Waters’ style is certainly unique and the idea of a new film from him after all this time is a welcome one. What’s more, he’s found a leading actor to match his far out style in the inimitable Aubrey Plaza. World of Reel broke the story, also quoting a piece from Dazed that revealed that Plaza has been campaigning for the role, with the actor previously stating that “I emailed him immediately and said, ‘you better let me audition for you. I even look like the girl on the cover’ of the book”.

“I’m throwing myself at his feet,” she added. “I’ll do anything to get the part. I mean anything.”

Even Plaza’s casting announcements are entertaining. Remember when she got the part opposite Jason Statham in Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre? Plaza announced her casting in that project by stating that “there’s no one more badass than Statham – and I’m coming for Statham. He better watch out. Because I’m going to destroy him, and he’s going to like it.”

As for Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance Story, it’s based on Waters’ own novel of the same name and ‘follows con artist Marsha Sprinkle, who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth – until one insane man makes her tell the truth.’

We’re very much on board for this one. The project was first announced back in 2022 but was slowed down due to the ongoing strikes. Shooting is set to begin this summer in Baltimore. Hopefully, we’ll see the film not too long after that. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
