Director Jay Roach reveals that Austin Powers 4 remains a possible project, but that there aren’t specific plans for a new film yet.
Since the release of Goldmember, the first and to date final movie in the Austin Powers series of films, there’s been on and off speculation about a possible fourth movie. Star Mike Myers has all but stepped back from movie acting, save for a few roles here and there, but that hasn’t stopped chatter about a new film over the years.
Jay Roach, who directed the trilogy, has most recently helmed the Oscar-winning Bombshell. And he’s been talking about the possibility of a new Austin Powers film.
“We talk about it once a month”, he told Movieweb, but added it can’t move forward “until we know what it specifically wants to be”. He noted that “there are some aspects of the way the world works right now that seem very Dr Evil-y to me. I’ll just put it that way. But no, we don’t have a specific plan for anything right now”.
Roach added later in the chat that he and Mike Myers both “root for it to come back”, but that the right story for a new film hasn’t come up. And that story call sounds like it’s “pretty much up to Mike”.
The full chat with Movieweb can be found here. If and when Austin Powers 4 moves forward, we – as with half the internet – will let you know…
