Anthony and Joe Russo, the directorial team responsible for Marvelā€™s biggest box office hits, are reportedly in talks to return to helm the upcoming Avengers films.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The BBC brought Russell T Davies back to steer the Doctor Who ship, and now it seems Marvel has a similar game plan.

According to Deadline, Marvel is in talks with Anthony and Joe Russo to return to helm the upcoming Avengers sequels. The directorial duo are responsible for the one of the best Marvel films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the biggest box office success in film history, Avengers: Endgame. So it makes sense Marvel might want a safe pair of hands to guide them through an increasingly tumultuous time (there were rumours earlier this month that Marvel initially turned down the Russosā€™ previous offer to direct an Avengers sequel).

Only this week, it was reported that screenwriter Michael Waldron had left the production of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, following in the footsteps of director Destin Daniel-Cretton,  Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness and the firing of Jonathan Majors as Kang.

There were reports of Deadpool & Wolverineā€™s Shawn Levy stepping in to direct, but that has not been confirmed.

Waldron is still attached to write the sixth Avengers film, Secret Wars.

The Russo Brothers have been busy since they left Marvel, directing The Gray Man and the upcoming Netflix film Electric State, which reunites them with Star Lord actor Chris Pratt.

Marvel has not commented on the story.

2024 is a quiet year by Marvel standards, with only the eagerly awaited Deadpool And Wolverine hitting cinemas on the 25th July. The film will see Ryan Reynolds quipping opposite Hugh Jackman, who reprises his role as Wolverine for the first time since 2017ā€™s Logan.

Television series Agatha All Along and animated shows Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man will premiere on Disney+ at the end of the year, before Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts are released in 2025.
