A24 is putting a longer cut of Backrooms in cinemas next week, with Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition adding 15 minutes of extra footage.

One of the year’s biggest hits is getting an extended re-release before it’s even left cinemas. Having already made over $330m worldwide from Backrooms, its distributor, A24, is releasing a longer cut of the amber-tinted horror on the 3rd July.

Called Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, the re-release popped up on US cinema chain AMC’s website, and as noted by Variety, it will add 15 minutes’ worth of extra footage, boosting the duration from 110 minutes to a meat 126 minutes.

Don’t expect a full-on director’s cut, though: rather, the extra footage has been tacked onto the end – it’s a “theatrically exclusive post-credit” as AMC puts it.

It’s a further sign of how popular Backrooms has been in the month since its release. Made for a relatively slim $10m, it’s turned its 21 year-old director Kane Parsons from a young hopeful making viral YouTube videos to one of the USA’s most talked-about new filmmakers.

Even if the extended edition of Backrooms doesn’t boost the coffers by much, it’s still A24’s most profitable release in its 14-year history. There’ll almost certainly be calls for a sequel – or several – but Parsons already has another original project lined up.

He’s teaming with Longlegs director Osgood Perkins, who’s said to have mentored Parsons through the process of making his debut feature. It’s not clear exactly what they’re working on, but it’s thought that Parson will direct and that Perkins will co-write.

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, Backrooms is itself an expansion – a fleshed-out take on Parsons’ own nightmarish YouTube series of the same name. Together with screenwriter Will Soodick, Parsons managed to apply a narrative and human story to the parallel world he already established, in which dimensions of austere, office-like interiors exist beyond our own.

In a huge year for horror, Backrooms is second only to Obsession (directed by fellow YouTuber Curry Barker) in the profits stakes. Both have eclipsed some of Hollywood’s most expensive offerings of 2026, including The Mandalorian And Grogu.

For studio producers used to the idea that spending $200m on a movie is a sure way of ensuring quality, this year is probably becoming its own backrooms-type nightmare.

There’s no word as to whether the Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition is coming to UK cinemas. We’ll update you accordingly if we hear anything.
