Barbie becomes the biggest film of the year in the US, and an IMAX release with added footage is now planned.

The Barbie movie, this very week, overtook The Super Mario Bros to become the highest grossing film of the year at the American box office. It’s also on its way to becoming the biggest grossing film of the year in 2023 as it jumps past the $1.3bn barrier. It’d be fair to say that Warner Bros is really rather pleased with the performance of Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed movie.

Furthermore, ahead of the film’s home rollout that begins in September, Warner Bros is going to put the film on IMAX screens for the first time. It’s going to get a re-release in the US and a few other thus far unnamed countries, and as well as seeing an avalanche of pink on a huge screen, the deal will be sweetened further with extra footage added at the end of the credits.

The new IMAX version of the film will play from September 22nd, and the release will be for one week only. The video on demand release for the film is expected around the same time.
