Joel Schumacherā€™s Batman & Robin is getting a, cough, much-demanded cinema re-release in the UK this September. More here.

Warner Bros’ celebration of Batman’s 85th birthday is seeing the studio re-release the Dark Knight’s movie adventures back onto the big screen. Joyously, at the end of this month, Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm appears on UK cinema screens in relatively wide release, which to my knowledge is the first such outing it’s had over here.

Then, of course, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy heads back onto the big screen starting from 20th September. Yet ahead of that, for the absolute completists and by no popular demand whatsoever, the infamous Batman & Robin is getting a fresh, wide UK cinema release. In its case, for the first time since 1997.

Park Circus is the company handing the re-release, and the film will be playing at over 100 cinemas around the UK from Friday 13th September. Appreciating there’s some morbid curiosity here, I’m genuinely fascinated to see how many people turn up to watch the late Joel Schumacher’s near franchise-killer.

George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, Chris O’Donnell and some other people all feature in the film. Over time, George Clooney has openly declared Batman & Robin the shitshow in truth that it actually is. Still, if you’ve never seen it on the big screen, and you’ve been yearning for the opportunity to be flooded with garish colour and a crap plot, then fill your boots: tickets will be going on sale shortly.

It brings to mind when every James Bond film got a fresh cinema re-release a few years ago. Perhaps unsurprising, films such as Goldfinger and Casino Royale outgrossed Octopussy.

Do, though, consider seeking out Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm on the big screen, not least to enjoy the late Shirley Walker’s superb score booming out of cinema speakers.
