There’s something big and scary lurking in the sea, and only Josh Hartnett, wearing a hat, can stop it. First trailer and details for Below, coming soon to Netflix:

It’s like the late 1970s all over again. The zeitgeist-grabbing smash that was Jaws prompted a wave of nature-strikes-back films, many of the watery variety. Take something like 1977’s Tentacles – an Italian Spielberg ‘homage’ in which John Huston, Henry Fonda and Shelley Winters did battle with a gigantic, unconvincing octopus.

Almost half a century later, it’s Josh Hartnett’s turn to combat… something lurking beneath the ocean waves in Below, the forthcoming monster thriller series from Netflix. Set in a quiet fishing community, the six-part series sees Hartnett, here playing a fisherman named Calvin, join forces with a Hooper-esque marine researcher to investigate a creature that is big and strong enough to pull a gigantic houseboat under the waves.

Here’s a synopsis, courtesy of Variety:

“Calvin Penney (Hartnett) is a big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town, who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late.”

There’s also a teaser trailer, courtesy of Netflix:

It looks quite good, doesn’t it? It’s also nice to see Hartnett’s ongoing career renaissance; he was great value in M Night Shyamalan’s Trap, and put in robust performances in Guy Ritchie’s Wrath Of Man and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

What creature is Hartnett up against here? Pleasingly, Netflix is keeping it in the shadows for now. Our money’s on a giant octopus.

Below streams on Netflix from the 8th October. We’ll have popcorn at the ready. Salted, of course.
