Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will be joined by Brendan Gleeson for the upcoming Joker 2: more here.

2019’s Joker may have been a divisive film critically, but there’s no doubt that it was box-office monster, earning over $1bn from a production budget of just $70m. Of course, those kinds of numbers meant a follow-up was always on the cards if the creative team wanted it, and we’ve known officially since June that this is the case.

Despite the first film being a complete story within itself, director Todd Philips has made some story decisions that do sound interesting, even to those who may have not been longing for a return to the bleak, harsh world of Arthur Fleck. Reports that the film will be a musical are an especially interesting turn of events for a major studio picture, plus the casting of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn feels nothing less than inspired. Margot Robbie’s take on the character has long been considered to be definitive with Warner Bros building part of its DC Extended Universe around her at one stage, but Gaga could yet give us a version of the beloved character that eclipses everything we’ve seen before.

Shooting for the project is set to take place in December with rumours suggesting that much of the film will take place in Arkham Asylum. If that’s the case, one of the residents of Arkham has now been confirmed with the news that Brendan Gleeson has now joined the cast. The veteran actor, who will next be seen in The Banshees Of Inisherin, (another collaboration with Martin McDonagh and Colin Farrell)  always brings a huge screen presence to any role he takes so we’re mightily looking forward to seeing him face off against Phoenix and Gaga.

Warner Bros has set an October 4th, 2024 date for the film, meaning it will arrive on the exact same day and month as its predecessor did back in 2019. Interest in this one is sure to be very high indeed, not least because Gleeson has now entered the fray. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
