A group of former triple-A developers, including the co-founder of Bungie, have set up a new studio dedicated to making games for Fortnite.
Look North World is a new studio with some big names behind it, not least Alex Seropian, the co-founder of Bungie and the developer behind such pivotal releases as Marathon and Halo.
What’s really striking about Look North World, though, is that it’s been set up specifically to develop and publish games for Fortnite.
The studio already has already launched its first game, Outlaw Corral, which it developed using Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN). It’s a one-on-one shooter with a wild west theme.
“Developing in UEFN opens a whole new world of opportunities and we are in uncharted territory,” Seropian said in a press release, as spotted by Destructoid. “Through experimentation we will see what the players like and involve them in decisions. We will throw in a mix of fun game components that players love with a healthy dose of humor when we can. We are jumping into it with a ‘the virtual sky is the limit’ mentality. As we develop creative ideas, we will learn how these platforms engage, entertain and boost social interactions in order to iterate accordingly.”
Look North World was set up using investment from London Venture Partners, and appears to be envisioned as a small, nimble studio that can use UEFN to try out new ideas. Or, as the press release puts it, “Look North is a game studio driven to experiment and explore while focusing on building unique, high-quality social games and entertainment.”
According to Look North World’s website, the studio was set up after Seropian’s previous company Industrial Toys, was shut down by EA. The new studio will, the site goes on to say, release “new games every two to three months”, which sounds like an ambitious undertaking.
With Outlaw Corral finished, the studio has its next game else in the works – a game called Project Murcielago. A small image on the studio’s website shows two dimly-lite coin-op cabinets, which appear to be Donkey Kong and Frogger. What is it? We’ll likely find out within the next two to three months.
