Where Shibumi leaves Chad Stahleski’s other projects such as Highlander and Ghost Of Tsushima is as yet unknown.
Chad Stahelski is a busy man. Currently the director is finishing up work on John Wick 4, but after that it’s difficult to tell as his slate is becoming increasingly full. It has been announced that Stahelski will be directing the assassin thriller Shbumi for Warner Bros. The tale of ‘well-traveled multilingual protagonist Hel becomes one of the highest-paid and most skilful assassins in the world’. The story, based on a 1979 novel, ‘encompasses espionage, revenge plots, global politics, and countless personal travails for Hel who grows up in Japan and becomes expert in the art of the ‘Naked/Kill’, a martial discipline that trains in the use of ordinary items as instruments of death.’
The book was reportedly a favourite of the filmmaker during his formative years and the film was a project that Stahelski had been set to produce for some time. With the news that the filmmaker is now stepping up to direct, that raises questions as to the status of several other projects that he is set to helm including the Highlander remake, the Ghost Of Tsushima adaptation for PlayStation Productions and Classified, the action-thriller that was announced back in March of 2021.
It’s unlikely that all of these projects, or even most of them will come to fruition, although Stahelski has been chatting lately about his plans for Ghost to be shot entirely in the Japanese language whilst he has also been talking up Highlander. We’ll have to see what transpires in the coming months once the next chapter of John Wick is out of the door and things begin to clear up regarding the director’s next steps.
