For the past six months, director Jaume Collet-Serra’s Cliffhanger reboot has hung on a precipice of its own. Originally set for release this August, the film’s future looked uncertain when its distributor, Row K, suddenly went bankrupt.

The new Cliffhanger has now been rescued thanks to the aptly-named indie distributor Vertical, which is said to have snapped up the high-wire action thriller at the Toronto International Film Festival. According to Deadline, the deal was made for an eight-figure sum.

Vertical is now looking at giving Cliffhanger a spring 2027 release – in cinemas, so this hopefully won’t be one we suddenly see appear on Prime Video without fanfare one Tuesday evening.

This is, potentially, the final chapter in a lengthy saga. Based on the 1993 hit of the same name, it was originally supposed to see Sylvester Stallone reprise his role as expert mountain climber Gabe Walker. Then there was a pay dispute, Sly walked away, and now Pierce Brosnan will play a rewritten version of the character (‘Ray Cooper’), who’s kidnapped and has to be rescued by Lily James.

Other actors and directors wandered in and out of the project as well. Ric Roman Waugh and Jean Francois Richet were among the filmmakers who were attached for a while; there was also talk of Russell Crowe playing the part now occupied by Brosnan.

Shooting finally got going in October 2024, with Collet-Serra – director of Nonstop and Carry-On) installed as director. The results are said to be rather good, at least according to someone named Peter Jarowey at Vertical.

โ€œJaume Collet-Serra has created a relentless, visually stunning thriller that takes everything audiences love about the original and delivers it with a fresh, modern intensity,” Jarowey told Deadline. “With Lily James and Pierce Brosnan leading an exceptional cast, weโ€™re thrilled to bring this next chapter of Cliffhanger to theaters in 2027.โ€

We’ll bring you any news of Cliffhanger’s UK release dates as it comes in.
