The director of Under The Shadow, Avak Anvari, has offered a brief update on his long-awaited monster movie sequel, Cloverfield 2.
Since Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield arrived in a blitz of viral marketing back in 2008, a couple of films have followed bearing the same name, existing in the same universe.
The 2016 sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane was retrofitted into becoming a Cloverfield film in post-production, while Paramount lost confidence in The Cloverfield Paradox and sold it to Netflix instead of releasing it in cinemas. Thereās also talk early last year that David Robert Mitchellās upcoming (and very secretive) Flowervale Street might be a secret Cloverfield movie, though thatās pure conjecture on our part.
Still, back in 2021, we were told that a direct sequel to Cloverfield was coming. Paramount clearly still has interest in more Cloverfield movies and hired Joe Barton to script the movie, with JJ Abrams producing. Anvak Anvari, director of the terrific Iranian supernatural thriller, Under The Shadow, is in place to direct. But as you might expect from a team well versed in waging expertly-crafted marketing campaigns, nothing has leaked about the film. There have been reports, though, that the sequel won’t be a found-footage film like the original.
Countdown City Geeks managed to catch up with Anvari, who would only say this about the project when asked to share any details about it:
“So sad that I cannot because everyone on that team is very secretive, which I understand. But whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”
So, despite not hearing an update for years, it seems that the project is still alive. As to when weāll get some more solid news than that, who knows? Anvari has been attached to direct the sequel since 2022, but weāre not sure at this point how much work on the project has been completed.
Weāll bring you more as we hear it.
