Ex-Guardian of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista, might be replacing Ryan Hurst in Amazon’s God Of War series after Hurst’s injury forced the role to be recast.
Amazon’s long-awaited God Of War series hit a major bump a couple weeks ago after Ryan Hurst, who was due to play lead character Kratos, tore his bicep. As you can guess, it’s an injury that takes months to heal and the role of Kratos is a particularly physical one so Amazon chose to recast the role of Kratos and simply reshoot the first four episodes that had already been completed.
That’s easier said than done; finding someone that fits the physical requirements of the role this quickly is a challenge, but Amazon may have found someone.
Variety reports that Dave Bautista, of WWE and Marvel fame, is in talks to take over the role. Bautista certainly has the look for the Greek god and has proven himself more than capable of handling dramatic material in James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy.
It’s still early days and nothing has been confirmed, but Bautista would offer a very convenient solution to Amazon’s problem. The actor wouldn’t need several months to get into the required shape for the role and Amazon could potentially get back to shooting later this year.
The God Of War series will be based on the video game series of the same name, particularly the two latest games in the franchise. The first season will follow the events of the first God Of War game where Kratos and his son Atreus While the second season will look at the second game, God Of War Ragnarok.
Here’s the logline for the show: “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
Callum Vinson will still play Atreus, but according to Forbes, the role will be recast for season two. The rest of the cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Ronald D. Moore is the writer, showrunner and executive producer steering the ship.
With production halted for the moment, there’s no word when God Of War might make it to our screens, but we’ll keep you updated on that.
