The Prime Video adaptation of God Of War will have to replace Kratos actor Ryan Hurst after he suffers an injury during production.

In a highly unusual situation, Prime Video’s God Of War TV series will need to find a new Kratos.

Sons Of Anarchy actor Ryan Hurst had previously been announced as the belligerent deity in February, and production on the series, headed up by Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D Moore, got underway not long after. Publicity shots of Hurst in character also emerged in February.

It’s now been confirmed over at Variety that Hurst suffered some sort of on-set injury in June – one so serious that, rather than delay the production while he rests up, the production is looking for a new actor to replace him.

Existing scenes will now have to be re-shot once that new actor’s found; at this stage, it’s unclear just how much was already filmed, though Variety also reports that God Of War’s producers hope to have the project back on track by this autumn.

Based on the 2018 and 2022 incarnations of the hit videogame series, God Of War is based on Norse mythology and will star Callum Vinson as Kratos’ son, Atreus, with supporting roles going to Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Alastair Duncan, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka and Ed Skrein.

Instances of actors dropping out of major roles are thankfully rare. Nicole Kidman was originally the lead in David Fincher’s Panic Room, but was forced to leave the production after several weeks due to a knee injury. Jodie Foster replaced her. Sean Young was originally going to play Vicki Vale in Tim Burton’s Batman, but a horse riding injury (she was training for a scene in the film that was ultimately never shot) saw her replaced by Kim Basinger.
