James Graham’s play Dear England premiered in 2023 at the National Theatre and less than a year later, a television adaptation was announced.
Now, we finally have some footage of the TV series, set to hit BBC very soon.
Here’s the Dear England trailer:
“England manager… who’d want to take on this poisoned chalice?” someone asks in the trailer and apparently the answer to that question is Gareth Southgate who coached the England men’s football team through 102 games and resigned from his position after the 2022 World Cup.
Joseph Fiennes reprises his role from the play as the England manager in this four-part TV event. Graham adapted his own play and Rupert Goold, the director of the stage show directed episode one with Paul Whittington taking over directing duties for the rest of the episodes.
BBC has announced that Dear England will premiere on 24th May. The first two episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from 9pm that evening with the last two appearing the Sunday after. On TV, the episodes will air on Sunday and Monday evenings.
The play, and presumably the show, will cover the England men’s football team during three major tournaments; the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the 2020 Euros at Wembley Stadium and 2022’s World Cup in Qatar.
Jodie Whittaker also stars as team psychologist Pippa Grange with Jason Watkins plays former FA chairman Greg Dyke and John Hodgkinson is former FA chairman Greg Clarke.
