Dave Bautista lands another leading role, with what might be the best premise for an action movie we’ve seen this year.
Dave Bautista returned to play the role of Drax the Destroyer, and sits again atop the box office chart following James Gunn’s (
very satisfying indeed)
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3. We’ve got high hopes for Bautista’s post-
Guardians career given how he’s successfully combined splashy, fun action movies such as
Army Of The Dead (in which he’s pictured on the set of,) with well-crafted, memorable ensemble appearances in films such as
Knock At The Cabin and
Blade Runner 2049.
The newly-announced
The Killer’s Game looks to be one for Bautista’s action CV but if we’ve come across a better premise for an action movie yet this year, we’ll eat our hat.
Here’s the synopsis below:
‘Based on a novel by Jay Bonansinga,
Game follows a veteran assassin named Joe Flood (Bautista), who is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. In order to set up his loves one financially, he authorises a kill on himself. However, after ordering the kill, he finds out that he was misdiagnosed and must then fend off the army of former colleagues trying to kill him.’
Somehow, this perfect high-concept project has been trying to get off the ground for two decades, with Paramount originally looking to make it. Some high-profile filmmakers such as Alex Proyas, Renny Harlin, Wolfgang Petersen and John Woo all considered the project with Jason Statham almost getting it off the ground back in 2015.
Lionsgate are backing the project and will be hoping that
The Killer’s Game might kickstart an action franchise to fill the
John Wick-sized hole in their slate over the coming years. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
