Madcap airport thriller Carry-On has proved to be a ratings success for Netflix, and now ranks fifth on its top 10 list of most-watched films.

Cannily timed to coincide with the festive break, Netflix thriller Carry-On is now one of the streaming giant’s most-watched movies. According to the firm’s own numbers, the airport-set nail-biter has notched up 149m views – meaning it currently occupies the fifth position on its top 10 list of most-viewed movies ever.

This means that Carry-On, starring Taron Egerton and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, has joined such esteemed company as action comedy romp Red Notice (in the number one spot with 230.9m views) and Sandra Bullock sci-fi horror Bird Box (157.4m).

As pointed out by Indiewire, Carry-On's success means that the starry murder mystery Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story has been edged off the list. Director Rian Johnson is probably calling his local hitman as we type this.

In case you were wondering what other hits are on Netflix’s top 10, the company has helpfully published the most-watched list on its website, complete with numbers. Here they are:

  1. Red Notice (230.9m)
  2. Don’t Look Up (171.4m)
  3. The Adam Project (157.6m)
  4. Bird Box (157.4m)
  5. Carry-On (149.4m)
  6. Leave The World Behind (143.4m)
  7. The Gray Man (139.3m)
  8. Damsel (138m)
  9. We Can Be Heroes (137.3m)
  10. The Mother (136.4m)

The list provides a thought-provoking insight into subscribers’ viewing habits. Just about all of these movies are thrillers of one sort or another, and most of them rely quite heavily on action and special effects. We’ll leave you to decide whether any of them could be regarded as classics.

At any rate, Carry-On's success has led to inevitable talk about a sequel. Speaking to Variety, Collet-Serra – something of a specialist in action thrillers set in confined settings – has said that there hasn’t been talk of a follow-up so far.

“There are no plans, but it’s fun to quietly talk about these things,” he said. “These characters are great. Look at Danielle Deadwyler’s character, [detective Elena Cole], you can see a world in which there’s a movie about her.”

Egerton, who played an airport security worker embroiled in a terrorist plot one busy Christmas, has also expressed his interest in coming back for a second Carry-On outing.

“I think it turned out great, and I am open to anything and everything,” Egerton said. “I’m still the guy who thinks every job is his last. You say sequel and my tail pricks up.”

There’s one other noteworthy detail to be found in Netflix’s top 10 list, though: to date, none of the films on it have been given a sequel. There was once talk of Robert Rodriguez’s kid-friendly action romp We can Be Heroes (uploaded in 2020) getting a follow-up, but four years on, no further news has materialised.

Similarly, Netflix has had two sequels to action thriller Red Notice in development for a while, but the last we heard, the scripts were still being written. That was in 2022.

The only possible exception is the 2018 horror Bird Box, which got a Spanish-language spin-off – Bird Box Barcelona.

Assuming Netflix does greenlight a Carry-On sequel, the titles essentially write themselves. Carry On Sergeant, Carry On Camping, Carry On Regardless… you get the idea.
